Patients are required to be assessed by the doctor before being referred to a specialist. It is the requirement of Medicare Australia to be assessed first before the referral in order to obtain the maximum Medicare benefits. A referral generally is valid for 12 months and in all cases, a consultation with the doctor is required for a repeated referral.
For special circumstances, a fee of $15 will be applied for a referral without seeing the doctor.
It is an offence for a doctor to "back date" a referral. We advise all patients to check their referral status and obtain a referral before the appointment with the specialists in order to obtain the Medicare rebate.
